Hi,
I haven't found mention of a book club in the Leicester/Nottingham area, so if anyone is interested in forming one can you get in touch by replying?
I'm 29, love reading all different types of fiction and would love to join/form a reading group.
Look forward to hearing from you!

I am currently reading Crocodile tears to audit my 9 year olds reading material, I also reading for pleasure Stieg Larrsson's The Girl who played with Fire. I have been slow on the up take for this trilogy, however, after reading the first book in 12 and half hours, whilst soaking up some much needed vitamin D over the Wimbledon fortnight, I have purchased the other two. I tend to read more than one book at a time so it was good to concentrate on just "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". I think it was pretty obvious what had occurred but the material had me hitting the next page button till the end.

I agree with you entirely. As a lifelong lover of the emotive senses one receives from reading a paper book, I was predictably cynical over the whole e-ink and electronic book on a screen thing. However, life changed when my wheelchair arrived and the inability to carry laptop, magazines, books and newspapers hit due to restrictions. I was determined this would not stop me reading. If I'm honest I was starting to get concerned about the size of my personal library anyway and the impact on local woodlands. I switched and haven't looked back. I get the odd real book at christmas and birthday as some of the family have taken a while to understand the reasons why, it means I still get the smells and feel of a new book at least twice a year. The plus points? Well now instead of just a couple of the books I'm reading at the moment I can carry my entire electronic library in one place! Result. I will be even happier when book publishers and authors automatically produce an eBook at the same time of publishing and the price shows the reduction in overheads! Long live eBooks I say!

I'm new to this forum so I thought I would introduce myself a little. My name is Lyndsay and I am interested in the Arts, especially Books and Literature so I was pleased when I came across this discussion group. I particularly like Gothic Literature, classical plays and playwrights, (Shakespeare, Marlowe, Greek tragedy and comedy), 19th and 20th century literature and some more recent modern novels.

I look forward to talking!

As ever I'm reading my favourite classics - all the little penguins from back in the day. outside penguin I've picked up a thriller called No Mercy by John Gilstrap which kept me up until 02:00 this morning.
Then there are all the old Desmond Bagleys which I'm revisiting this summer - McLean last year, Gavin Lyall next summer and so on.
Best of all is The Russian Job by Graham Swinton which is for those folk who got annoyed when Michael Caine, Noel Coward and three minis left a bus hanging over a mountain pass in the ultimate cliffhanger ending. When Troy Kennedy Martin didn't write the sequel Swinton did in time for the Millennium with a 30 year older Charlie Croker getting out of gaol to do the next of Beckerman's jobs. Shakespeare it aint but if you're after a way to fill a few summer hours

I like my books made out of paper, card, string, glue and pictures. It's nice to sit in a comfortable corner of the train with a book in one hand, England going past in the window and whatever the day's special is next to an espresso and a fizzy water. Or it was. recently I counted twelve books, four magazines, a stack of 'paper' work and a hurting back. So it's hurty-back and dihydrocodeine or...
... an iPad, a keyboard and over 400 books, all of my work and a download of my four favourite magazine. A bloke and blokess nearby had a kindle and a sony ereader so we did the swap and try out thing.
I'm no longer old fashioned. I need to scrape some book-smell out of the corner of expired library books to spread on the table to get the authentic smell but otherwise all is OK. This missive is part of my plan to bombard all of my favourite publishers (listen up Penguin...) to get the catalogue on to ePubs where the books are cheaper, quicker and never out of stock. As a writer too, I was amazed how quick it was from idea to on the shelf at a price. I wanted The Russian Job out as an eReader and A*m*z*n only took 40 hours including the back catalog check and rights issue. Seems like a winwinwin thing. Shame about the 'real' books but there are libraries and I'll always have the home shelves. It's the portable on a train on the beach in a hotel on an aeroplane thing that books are so good - but so heavy at. So a big vote YES from the onevoltperoctave camp. I know they're not perfect but they float my canoe. However, that's only my opinion, I'd love to hear the other side (but please Penguin... get all my favourites on to Kindle (if you haven't already)

Hello All,

A big thank you to Jen, Natasha (thanks for the lift), Emily and Lucy for attending the meeting last night. :-)

Loved the Lord Clifden - must go there again. :-)

I think the general consensus regarding 'The Haunting of Hill House' by Shirley Jackson was that it was well liked. The horror creeps up on you slowly and you don't see the end coming as it did.

The next book is "The Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rose" by Alice Munro.

We're meeting next on July the 29th.

We might go for a meal in Moseley or Kings Heath as a Book Group Outing if people are up for it?

See you soon.

Regards,

Nine Lives, by William Dalrymple.
In this title, a Buddhist monk takes up arms to resist the Chinese invasion of Tibet - then spends the rest of his life trying to atone for the violence by hand printing the best prayer flags in India. A Jain nun tests her powers of detachment as she watches her best friend ritually starve to death. A woman leaves her middle-class family in Calcutta, and her job in a jute factory, only to find unexpected love and fulfilment living as a Tantric skull feeder in a remote cremation ground. A prison warden from Kerala becomes, for two months of the year, a temple dancer and is worshipped as a deity; then, at the end of February each year, he returns to prison. An illiterate goet herd from Rajasthan keeps alive an ancient 4,000-line sacred epic that he, virtually alone, still knows by heart. A devadasi - or temple prostitute - initially resists her own initiation into sex work, yet pushes both her daughters into a trade she now regards as a sacred calling. Nine people, nine lives. Each one taking a different religious path, each one an unforgettable story. Exquisite and mesmerising, and told with an almost biblical simplicity, William Dalrymple's first travel book in over a decade explores how traditional forms of religious life in South Asia have been transformed in the region's rapid change. A distillation of twenty-five years of exploring India and writing about its religious traditions, "Nine Lives" is a modern Indian Canterbury Tales.

Winter On The Nile, by Anthony Sattin.
In the winter of 1849, Florence Nightingale was an unknown 29-year-old - beautiful, well-born and deeply unhappy. After clashing with her parents over her refusal to marry, she had been offered a lifeline by family friends who suggested a trip to Egypt, a country which she had always longed to visit. This book follows her journey along the Nile: a romantic adventure, but also a deeply spiritual one. It was during the trip that she found emotional recovery, the inspiration to resist parental pressure and the resolve to pursue her dream of a career in nursing. By an extraordinary coincidence, taking the same boat from Alexandria was an unpublished French writer, Gustave Flaubert. Like Nightingale, he was at the crossroads in his life that was to lead to future acclaim and literary triumph. As it did for her, Egypt for him represented escape and freedom as well as inspiration. But as a wealthy young man travelling with male friends, he had access to an altogether different Egypt: where Nightingale sought out temples and dispensaries, Flaubert visited brothels and harems. Both of them were entranced, moved and liberated by the wonders of the Nile. As privileged early travellers, they saw an ancient landscape unchanged for centuries, and visited monuments still familiar to tourists today. And both wrote magnificently about the sights they saw. This is a book about a key moment in the life of Florence Nightingale, a tantalising portrait of a young woman on the brink of international fame. But it also wonderfully counterpoints her journey with that of a future French literary genius, and it provides fascinating insight into the early days of travel to one of the greatest tourist destinations on the planet.

Hi
Does anyone know of any book clubs in the Rotherham area that meet regulary on an informal basis?

Or would anyone be interested in starting one?

I'm interested in reading all types of fiction, especially thrillers, travel and books that are a bit 'different'.

Well, we did it. The inaugural meeting of the Dorchester Book Group went ahead as planned. There were only two of us in the end, me and Laura, but you've got to start somewhere. We chatted about what sort of books we've read recently and the sort of stuff we like to read.

Laura has already enlisted two more people so there will hopefully be at least four people there next time. We will be reading "Wolf Hall" by Hilary Mantel and meeting to discuss it at 7.30pm Tuesday 29th June at the Poet Laureate pub in Poundbury, Dorchester.

Visit http://dorchesterbookgroup.proboards.com/ to express your interest or leave comments or whatever. Would be good to get an idea of numbers at some point before we meet up again.

Theatre503 is an Olivier award winning theatre, based in the heart of Battersea. The smallest theatre ever to win an Olivier award, we’ve been called a “powerhouse of new writing” and “Arguably one of the most important theatres in London.” If you’re based in South West London then Theatre503 may well be your local theatre.

Theatre503 is a fresh, exciting new theatre which debuts a huge variety of new work, from Katori Hall’s award winning “On the mountain top” to our most recent critical success “Madagascar” by J.T Rogers, as well as working with well known actors such as Susannah York, David Harewood and Sorcha Cusack.

With Ticket prices range from £14 to £9 for concessions, as well as weekly “Pay what you can nights” a night out at Theatre503 costs less than a third of what you would pay for a west end show. The experience of our 65 seat theatre is intimate and intense. As such there are no bad seats, and you can even bring your drink in with you. We also run meal-deals with the downstairs pub, so why not make a night of it?

I have just finished The Help which I resisted for a long time. The cover of the book didn't tempt, I snobbishly thought it would be concerned with domestic issues which are of no interest to me. Having so many friends tell me 'you're mad (and a book snob too), read it', I opened the first page and... like so many others could not put it down. The author's ability to give life to the three main characters (and a large support cast too) was so skillfully and truthfully done. The sense of place, of that era when so many important things happened and black people began to find a voice was mesmerising and shocking. Most importantly, there is no neatly tied up happy ending. The ending is one of the saddest I've read (I found it hard not to howl out) but there is so much hope for better things to come and a real sense of how things were changing.

A friend of mine told me it read like a thriller and she was right. I stayed up late, I missed trains, I refused dazzling party invitations till I'd read the last page. Then I looked greedily for more of this author's books. It's her first so it will be a while - but I can't wait.

Okay, let's get something organised before everyone drifts away. Why don't we say next Tuesday (18/05/10) at the PL, at 7.30pm? Better to start with just a two or three people and work our way up. I'll hold off booking the NEC for the moment!

All those in favour please post a message (don't want to be the only one there). Once we've agreed there are at least two of us going on a particular date my other half can put a message on DCC's noticeboard about it which will hopefully attract some more people.
